The Regional Waste Management Forum has begun: The foundations are laid, a new phase in reforms follows

The forum was opened by the Ambassador of Sweden, Ola Sohlström, with introductory remarks delivered by Ane Lashkoska, Deputy Minister of Environment and Physical Planning; Zlatko Perinski, Minister of Local Self-Government; Dushica Perishikj, Executive Director of ZELS; and Ryan Knox, Executive Director of SALAR International. The forum is being held within the framework of the project "Sustainable Waste Management at the Local Level," funded by Sweden and implemented by SALAR International, in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning, the Ministry of Local Self-Government, and ZELS.

The forum serves as a continuation of already established processes and achieved results, including the formation of the Inter-Municipal Waste Management Board (IMWMB) for the Pelagonia and South-west regions as a key mechanism for coordination and joint decision-making among municipalities. Furthermore, progress on current local action plans is already visible—32% of activities are fully implemented, 45% are underway, and 23% are in preparation. Concurrently, the increased active role of the municipalities, strengthened institutional coordination, and support from international partners are creating favorable conditions to further intensify reforms. The foundations have already been laid, and the focus is now shifting toward the next phase.

Precisely within this context, the forum brings together key stakeholders to define the next steps regarding the strategic and operational aspects of establishing a functional RWMS, which is recognized as a pivotal project that will bring significant changes. The focus will be on the new cycle of regional planning, which will be conducted in parallel with the implementation of current local action plans, as well as on infrastructure investments, institutional coordination, operational improvements, and building trust through public engagement.

Regarding the new Regional Waste Management Plan for both regions (2027–2032), which will be drafted in the coming period by the municipalities with the support of SALAR International, it will serve as a practical tool for translating strategic goals into concrete and time-bound activities. It is crucial for the further implementation of the RWMS and will enable more efficient coordination, better resource utilization, and the gradual establishment of a modern system aligned with European standards, ultimately ensuring higher quality services and a cleaner environment for the citizens.
