A formal reception was held tonight in Skopje, attended by the Deputy Minister of Environment and Physical Planning, Ane Lashkoska, the Minister of Local Self-Government, Zlatko Perinski, the Executive Director of ZELS, Dushica Perishikj, and the mayors of municipalities from the Pelagonia and Southwest regions. They were joined by the Head of Development Cooperation at the Embassy of Sweden, Mikael Atterhög, the Swiss Ambassador, Christophe Sommer, and representatives of international organizations. The event was dedicated to strengthening regional cooperation as the basis for holding tomorrow’s constitutive session of the Inter-Municipal Waste Management Board (IMWMB).
Partners emphasized that the state is entering a new phase of establishing a functional Regional Waste Management System (RWMS). This process is essential and key for fulfilling national legal obligations, as well as for improving the quality of the environment, but also for approaching the standards and requirements of the European Union.
The municipalities from both regions, after three years of coordinated work, planning, and development of municipal capacities, are moving towards the practical implementation of the RWMS. Tomorrow's establishment of the IMWMB represents an essential step towards integrated, coordinated, and transparent waste management.
Sweden, through the support of SALAR International, as well as Switzerland and other partners, reaffirmed their long-term commitment to reforms related to waste management. Both partner countries provide expertise, financial support, and institutional credibility – factors that are crucial for successful systemic transformation.
The mayors from the Pelagonia and Southwest regions expressed their readiness, will, and determination to work together for the benefit of the citizens in function of environmental protection.
The present institutions recognized and welcomed the continuous effort over the past three years – the implementation of consultative processes, technical support, development and support in the implementation of local plans, strengthened municipal teams and capacities, and inter-institutional coordination – led jointly with SALAR International, which ensures a stable entry into the phase of operational implementation.
