Swedish Ambassador Visits Prilep: City Becomes a Model for Modern Waste Management

The Municipality of Prilep hosted the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden to the Republic of North Macedonia, Ola Sohlström. Accompanied by embassy representatives, members of SALAR International, and a working group from the Municipality of Prilep, the Ambassador visited the waste sorting plant near Alinci.
This significant project positions Prilep as a national leader in waste sorting and modern waste management.
During the visit, officials emphasized that continuous effort, a clear vision, and successful collaboration with international partners have helped Prilep and the Pelagonia region become recognized as a benchmark for positive progress in North Macedonia.
Ambassador Sohlström noted that Prilep and the Pelagonia region are among the driving forces in the country for this initiative, underscoring the importance of further upgrading the waste management system and sharing these best practices with other municipalities.
As part of ongoing efforts to modernize the system, intensive work is underway on the regional landfill in Novaci. This plan includes building a waste transfer station in Prilep, located right next to the sorting plant. The station will streamline waste transport from several municipalities to the regional landfill, marking a major step toward establishing a modern and sustainable regional infrastructure.
Additionally, Mayor Dejan Prodanoski announced that another new vehicle—part of a fleet of eight specialized vehicles for PUC "Komunalec" Prilep funded by the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning—is expected to arrive in the coming days.
Work is also currently underway to connect the sorting plant to the electrical grid, and the local government expects it to become operational soon. Once launched, the plant will not only meet Prilep's needs but will also provide commercial waste sorting services to neighboring municipalities.
The Municipality of Prilep remains deeply committed to fostering a cleaner environment, building modern public utility infrastructure, and improving the quality of life for all its citizens.
