First workshop for the preparation of the new Regional Waste Management Plan for the Pelagonia and Southwest regions held

Following the conclusion of the Regional Waste Management Forum in Skopje, on April 29 and 30, 2026, there was a working session dedicated to the preparation of the new Regional Waste Management Plan (RWMP) for the Pelagonia and Southwest regions for the 2027–2032 period.

The workshop was attended by representatives of municipalities and public utility companies, who are members of the waste management working groups. The focus was on discussions regarding the results of the RWMP implementation so far, the challenges faced by the municipalities, and the priorities for the upcoming six-year period. Special emphasis was placed on the need for the new plan to be practical, achievable, and aligned with the realistic needs and capacities of the municipalities.

During the first day of the workshop, the methodology for preparing the new RWMP was presented, which envisions the active involvement of municipalities, a transparent process, and data-driven planning. Additionally, the "Waste-Free Region" web platform was presented, which will serve as a centralized tool for accessing information, monitoring conditions, and supporting the decision-making process.

The second working day of the workshop was dedicated to defining the vision and priorities of the new regional plan through joint efforts and coordination among all stakeholders. The goal is to lay the foundation for a modern, functional, and sustainable regional waste management system that will ensure higher quality services and a cleaner environment for the citizens.

The process is being implemented within the framework of the project "Sustainable Waste Management at the Local Level," funded by Sweden and implemented by SALAR International. It aims to ensure a coordinated, inclusive, and practical approach to establishing a functional and sustainable regional waste management system.
